About Me

My photo
After retirement, for two summers I worked as a tour guide at the Umpqua River Lighthouse in Oregon. This opportunity enabled me to learn more about that lighthouse than any of the others I've seen. Although I have personally visited and photographed over 300 lighthouses in the United States and three Provinces in Canada, the Umpqua River Lighthouse has special meaning for me. That Lighthouse inspired me to write two fictional books with the characters working, living, and enduring the challenges of lighthouse keeping. All pictures posted in this blog were taken by myself, unless noted otherwise.

Book Info.

I hope you will find time to enjoy my books. Preview the book covers below at the right side of page.

Florida - St Johns Light Station

The St Johns Light Station is located at Mayport Naval Air Station, Mayport, FL. It was built in 1954 and is operated by the U.S. Coast Guard and Navy Relief. At the time of my visit here in 2000, this light was active and the station was not open to the public.

Hi Al,
I take it that both of these lighthouses are on opposite sides of St John River, right? Both are beautiful.

Elegant! This one reminds me of a castle keep--though there's nothing sinister in this case.

Hi Richard. Thank you for your comment. Yes, this lighthouse is very unique in style and much different than most.

Hi Anonymous. Thank you for your interest in the St Johns River Lighthouses. The St Johns River Lighthouse sits next to the river, while the light station sits a short distance away on the same side of the river, but next to the Atlantic Ocean.

We were just there and got a picture of the red St. Johns River Light. How did you get your picture of the white St. Johns lighthouse?

Hi Lynette;
The St Johns Light Station (The white lighthouse with out a lantern room on top)sits on the Mayport Naval Air Station at Mayport, FL. It was operated by the U.S. Coast Guard and Navy Relief. At the time of my visit there in 2000, the lighthouse itself was not open to the public. I don't recall the details, but I'm retired Army and was able to get close enough to the lighthouse to get the picture.
Hope this information was helpful in answering your question.

Sincerely;
Al Bates
